RYAN AUSTINI started riding as a kid growing up in Saudi Arabia where I spent 17 years. These years were filled with lots of sand and desert riding throughout the Middle East in a wide variety of conditions and terrain. Motorcycling became my passion. Since moving to Canada, I have ridden a wide variety of motorcycles both on and off road and over the years have logged in excess of 200,000 kilometres criss-crossing Canada and the United States many times. A favourite trip while living in Ontario was riding from Ontario down to Arizona and the Grand Canyon and then circling back up and coming through Utah, Wyoming and Montana before either coming back through the US or heading back up into Canada to ride the Rockies in BC and Alberta before heading home. Some fairly serious riding! Some of the motorcycles I have ridden while living in Canada include:
Police riding in Ontario and BC since 2001 on the following motorcycles:
My training includes: Civilian
Police
Motorcycle Instructor Certification at the Sacramento Regional Driver Training Facility (SRDTF) in Sacramento California. (SRDTF is the only BMW certified Police training facility in North America at this time.) |

PAUL LUHOWYI took my first steps towards realizing a life long passion for motorcycles when, in 1999 I enrolled in the Canada Safety Council Basic Motorcycle Course. I began riding my first bike (a KLR 650) and was hooked from there. When I started my second career in policing I knew that traffic duties on a motorcycle were my calling. In 2004 I took the two week Basic Police Motor Operators course and qualified on the Harley Davidson Road King. In the summer of 2006 Ryan and I were sent to Sacramento, California to take the Police Motor Instructors Course. This was a two week course at the Sacramento Regional Driver Training Facility operated by the Sacramento Police Department. Ryan and I qualified to ride and instruct the BMW, Harley Davidson and Kawasaki Police Motorcycles. The course entailed one week of very intensive track and highway riding. This was followed with Ryan, myself and fellow instructor candidates teaching new police riders on their first qualification course. I have owned and ridden all types of motorcycles over the past eight years, from 1000cc sport bikes to cruisers to big dual sports and dirt bikes. I have to admit that my real passion is in dual sport riding. My wife and I have traveled throughout the United States and off road in Mexico logging nearly 16,000 km in two trips. Over a few years of police motorcycle duties I have logged many thousands of kilometers. I ride for pleasure rain or shine and throughout the year when it is safe. Police riding, as you can imagine, is a very demanding form of riding, often requiring the officer to ride in an aggressive manner at high speeds through intense rush-hour traffic. To ensure that I perform these duties as safely as possible for both myself and the other motorists, I strive every day to improve my bike handling and teaching skills. These are the skills we teach. Safety on a motorcycle is paramount. A respected police instructor once told me "ride your own ride, not someone else’s." My dream trips are to either ride across North Africa or from Morocco to South Africa. One day soon I will also ride the Dempster Highway through Alaska and onto Inuvik. On my KTM 990R Adventure!
